UPDATE: The family of Daniel Waterman, a father-to-be who tragically died following a car crash allegedly caused by his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, is speaking out through their attorney. Just this week, Mumby, 24, was charged with vehicular homicide after Waterman succumbed to injuries sustained in the February incident.
Waterman, 22, a resident of New York, was a passenger in Mumby’s vehicle when it crashed on I-95 North in Flagler County, Florida. He suffered critical injuries and died on October 8, 2025, after a prolonged battle in the hospital. Authorities report that Waterman communicated with them from his hospital bed, revealing that Mumby allegedly stated, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve,” before the crash occurred.
Attorney John Hager, representing Waterman’s family, expressed their satisfaction with the charges, stating, “There are no real winners in this situation. It’s a terrible, horrible situation, and the fact that these charges were filed, I think were right and just.” His family appreciates the diligence of the State Attorney’s office in Flagler County in pursuing justice.
Mumby was initially arrested in July and faced charges of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Following Waterman’s death, those charges were escalated to vehicular homicide. She was booked into the Flagler County Jail and released after posting a $150,000 bond.
According to a report by Syracuse.com, Waterman’s mother noted that he had been in a coma before regaining consciousness to share details about the crash. His grandfather, Michael Gilman, revealed the extensive injuries Waterman endured, stating, “He broke everything. It wasn’t much, not broken.”
An obituary featured on Syracuse.com poignantly described Waterman as an excited father-to-be, eagerly awaiting the arrival of his baby girl. The obituary highlights his passion for basketball and the lasting impact he left on those who knew him: “His strength, determination, and infectious energy left a lasting impression.”
The Flagler County Attorney’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the case. As the legal proceedings unfold, the family continues to grieve the loss of a young man whose life was cut short by a tragic act.
This developing story underscores the profound human impact of road safety and the severe consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel. As the community reacts, many are left pondering the implications of this case and the urgent need for accountability in similar incidents.
