Buffalo, New York, is gearing up to host the NCAA tournament for the eighth time, a tradition that has brought memorable moments and thrilling games to the city. These tournaments have showcased exceptional talent and surprising upsets, particularly highlighted by the events of 2014. That year, the tournament unfolded at what was then known as the First Niagara Center, where the University of Connecticut (UConn) began its remarkable championship journey.
In 2014, UConn, under the leadership of head coach Kevin Ollie, made headlines as a No. 7 seed. This marked a shift from the previous championship team that boasted a lineup of future NBA stars. The Huskies opened their tournament with a solid first-round victory against Milwaukee, which set the stage for a stunning second-round upset. They faced and defeated No. 2 seed Villanova with a score of 77-65 in a tournament that proved to be one of the most unpredictable in recent history.
UConn’s path did not stop there. The Huskies continued their impressive run by overcoming eighth-seeded Kentucky, ultimately securing the school’s fourth national championship. The journey of UConn was not the only story that emerged from Buffalo during the tournament. Notably, No. 11 seed Dayton delivered a shocking upset against sixth-seed Ohio State, winning 60-59 in the first round. They followed this by knocking out third-seeded Syracuse with a narrow 55-53 victory, further showcasing the tournament’s unpredictability.
Buffalo’s venues, including the First Niagara Center and previously known arenas like HSBC Arena and the KeyBank Center, have become synonymous with NCAA basketball. The city has a storied history of hosting postseason games, drawing basketball fans from across the nation. As the NCAA tournament approaches in March 2024, Buffalo is poised to create new memories that will be featured in the tournament’s iconic montage, “One Shining Moment.”
The excitement is set to build with four first-round games scheduled for Thursday, March 19, followed by two second-round games on Saturday, March 21. Buffalo’s fans eagerly anticipate another chance to witness the intensity and drama that March Madness brings, as the city prepares to welcome teams and supporters for yet another unforgettable tournament experience.
