UPDATE: In a thrilling debut, Brandon McCoy electrified fans at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday night, leading Sierra Canyon to a commanding 60-45 victory over JSerra. Just cleared to play after his transfer from St. John Bosco, McCoy showcased his skills with an astonishing five consecutive dunks in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with 25 points, including an incredible nine dunks.
After a sluggish first half, JSerra (4-1) fought back, narrowing the gap to 43-39 in the fourth quarter. McCoy, who sat out much of the third due to foul trouble, ignited a decisive 10-0 run that sealed the game. “I was really excited to play,” McCoy said, reflecting on his long-awaited debut. “Playing in historic Pauley Pavilion was great.”
In another nail-biter, Servite edged out Loyola with a last-second three-pointer from freshman Tariq Johnson, clinching victory with just 3.8 seconds left on the clock. Johnson, a rising star, finished with 16 points.
Other highlights included Orange Lutheran defeating St. Francis 58-49, powered by Noah Zeola’s 19 points and Josh King’s 18 points. Meanwhile, Crespi dominated Mater Dei, winning 90-59, thanks to Isaiah Barnes, who scored 23 points while also paying tribute to his father’s legacy in the arena.
In girls basketball, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame triumphed over Palisades 65-50, with Zi Kennybrew leading the scoring with 14 points. Ontario Christian also had a strong performance, crushing Phoenix O’Connor 91-37, highlighted by Kaleena Smith’s impressive 35 points.
