Houston’s defense delivered a remarkable performance on Thursday night, overpowering the Buffalo Bills to secure a 23-19 victory at NRG Stadium. The Texans recorded a staggering eight sacks, with linebacker Will Anderson Jr. contributing 2.5 sacks and defensive back Calen Bullock forcing three turnovers, including a pivotal interception in the closing moments of the game.
The Texans, now with a record of 6-5, achieved their third consecutive win, marking their first time this season above .500. Quarterback Davis Mills, filling in for the injured C.J. Stroud, threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns in a solid outing that bolstered the team’s efforts against the Bills.
The game turned into a defensive showdown, particularly in the final minutes. With the Bills trailing by four points, Allen faced immense pressure and was sacked twice on their last possession. The drive ended dramatically when Bullock intercepted Allen at the Houston 9-yard line, sealing the Texans’ victory with just 24 seconds remaining.
Defensive Dominance and Key Plays
Throughout the game, Allen struggled against the relentless Texans’ defense. He managed to pass for 253 yards but failed to throw a touchdown, a stark contrast to his six-touchdown performance the previous week against Tampa Bay. The eight sacks Allen endured marked a career high, underscoring the challenges he faced from a tenacious Texans’ front.
Anderson’s performance was particularly notable, as he tied Mario Williams for the longest streak in franchise history with a sack in six consecutive games. His impressive play included a near-sack that resulted in an 18-yard loss for Allen, forcing a punt early in the third quarter.
The Texans capitalized on a key turnover late in the third quarter when Bullock forced a fumble after a catch by Khalil Shakir. Teammate Jaylen Reed recovered the ball and returned it to the Buffalo 22-yard line, setting up a field goal that extended Houston’s lead to 23-16.
Buffalo’s offense struggled to find its rhythm, particularly after James Cook was stopped for a loss on a critical fourth-and-1 attempt. Cook, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, became the third player in franchise history to achieve over 1,000 rushing yards in three consecutive seasons.
Game Highlights and Injuries
The game featured a series of momentum swings. Buffalo initially took the lead with Cook’s 45-yard touchdown run, although they missed the extra point. Houston responded with a field goal, narrowing the gap, before taking the lead with a touchdown pass to Christian Kirk just before halftime.
In a dramatic sequence, Bullock’s interception was nullified by a penalty, yet Houston managed to score another field goal to lead 13-9. The Bills briefly regained the lead with a spectacular 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by Ray Davis, marking Buffalo’s first kick return for a touchdown since January 2023.
Injuries also played a role in the game. Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard exited with an elbow injury, while Texans cornerback Ajani Carter left the field with a hamstring injury late in the fourth quarter.
Buffalo’s receiver Keon Coleman was again inactive due to disciplinary reasons, and the team placed Mecole Hardman on injured reserve following a calf injury sustained during his debut.
Referee Adrian Hill also left the game after sustaining an injury, requiring a substitution from the officiating crew.
The Texans will seek to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on November 30. Meanwhile, the Bills will look to rebound when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers on the same day.
