The Central Coast Section (CCS) D-IV girls cross country championship unfolded on October 28, 2023, at the Crystal Springs course in Belmont, California, showcasing a competitive field of runners. Scotts Valley High secured the team title with a total of 52 points, narrowly edging out Aptos High, which also finished with 52 points. The championship race highlighted the talent of the athletes, particularly from the Santa Cruz County area.
In an impressive display, Hanna Shehorn from Scotts Valley High not only led her team to victory but also clinched the individual title, finishing first among a field of 112 runners. Her teammate, Ava Decleve, closely followed, taking second place. The performance of both athletes was crucial in securing the team championship.
Aptos High’s Maya Schiro demonstrated remarkable endurance and skill, finishing third in the individual standings. The competition was fierce, as evidenced by the close finishes among the top runners. Sisters Kenzie Culbertson and Pierce Culbertson from Aptos finished fifth and sixth, respectively, contributing to their team’s strong showing and overall second-place finish.
Scotts Valley’s Hailey Shehorn, sibling of the individual champion, rounded out the top placements by finishing seventh.
