Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a respected figure in the Hermosa Beach community, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 74 on December 3, 2025. Her death was attributed to complications from diabetes.
Born in Queens, New York, to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea, Cathy spent her formative years in Hermosa Beach. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969 and went on to marry Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. Together, they became well-known for their contributions to the community, particularly through their work with the glass business, Shea Company, in Hermosa Beach.
Cathy’s commitment to community service was evident throughout her life. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to Hermosa Valley School, where she founded the Kiwanis Builders Club. Her efforts extended to her support of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association, helping to foster educational and cultural initiatives.
Beyond her work in education, Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the Los Angeles County Beach Commission for nearly a decade. Her active involvement in the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach further showcased her dedication to community service, where she held various leadership roles, including President. In recognition of her contributions, Cathy was honored as the “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of life will take place at the Kiwanis Hall, situated at 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach.
Cathy McCurdy leaves behind a legacy of kindness and commitment to her community, remembered fondly by friends, family, and all who knew her. Her contributions to education and civic activities will be felt for years to come.
