Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes launched a vital food drive on November 14, 2025, aiming to collect 500 frozen turkeys for families in need as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. The event takes place at the Walmart located in Seneca Falls, New York, and is part of a broader initiative to support those struggling to put food on the table during this challenging time.
The drive is particularly significant this year due to the impact of the government shutdown and the temporary suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which has left many families vulnerable. “Just right now at this time, there’s so many families in need of just putting food on the table, especially with the holidays coming up,” stated coordinator Cruz, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
In addition to turkeys, the organizers are also collecting non-perishable food items to bolster local food pantries across Seneca, Ontario, and Cayuga counties. The drive is set to continue until noon on November 16, offering community members an opportunity to contribute to a cause that directly impacts their neighbors.
Cruz, who began her day at 3 a.m., expressed her commitment to the cause. “I was up at 12:30 this morning, so I was here at 3 a.m., 4 a.m., but it’s OK,” she said, holding a cup of coffee. To encourage participation, donors will receive a complimentary cider donut and fresh cider for their contributions.
Rae, another volunteer dressed in a turkey costume, emphasized the importance of community involvement. “We need to get together and do something good for the community, bring everybody together, doing something nice for other families,” she remarked. The drive not only aims to provide immediate assistance but also fosters a sense of solidarity among residents.
As the situation develops, organizers remain hopeful that the community will respond generously to the call for help. Donations can be made in person at Walmart or through an online platform for those wishing to contribute financially.
