Yvonne Eure Aucoin, a dedicated educator and long-time resident of Virginia Beach, passed away on December 24, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She faced her illness with remarkable strength and dignity, supported by her deep faith in Jesus Christ.
Born on November 22, 1946, Yvonne graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1964. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from James Madison University and a master’s degree in mathematics from East Carolina University. For over 50 years, she passionately taught mathematics at Tidewater Community College (TCC), Old Dominion University (ODU), and Norfolk State University (NSU). Her commitment to education inspired countless students, fostering a love for mathematics that transcended generations.
Yvonne’s influence extended beyond the classroom. She formed lasting friendships with her colleagues at TCC, ODU, and NSU, creating a supportive community of educators. Her dedication to her students and fellow educators was recognized through her membership in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, which honors women educators, and her active participation in the Order of the Eastern Star.
Family and Community Impact
Yvonne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Commander James “Jim” Aucoin, United States Navy (Retired), as well as her parents, Mills Roberts and Belle Boyce Eure, and her brother, Robert Brooks Eure. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Anne Aucoin Jordan and Elizabeth Aucoin, as well as her stepchildren: Diane Aucoin Burkeen (Frank) of Culver, OR, David Aucoin (Lynne) of Fairfax, VA, William Aucoin (Dana) of Annapolis, MD, and Stacey Aucoin Baca (Robert) of Annapolis, MD. Additionally, she leaves behind several step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Yvonne cherished her companionship with Robert “Bob” Maynard of Virginia Beach and her friendship with Jennifer Jordan Smith of Chesapeake. She was also devoted to her German Shepherd, Lily, who provided comfort and companionship throughout her life.
Yvonne’s spiritual journey began at Elm Avenue United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, where she was raised. Later, she became a devoted member of Baylake United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. There, she prepared weekly lessons for the Friendship Sunday School Class, demonstrating her talent for teaching and her passion for mission and outreach ministries.
Memorial Service and Acknowledgments
A memorial service in Yvonne’s honor will take place at Baylake United Methodist Church, located at 4300 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA, on January 18, 2026, at 14:00, with the Reverend David Edinger presiding. A private burial occurred at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth, where Yvonne was laid to rest alongside her parents and other family members.
Her family and friends express their profound gratitude to Bay Lake Retirement & Assisted Living, Trinity Hospice, and the staff at Sentara Virginia Beach, along with Dr. Veronique Duguay, for the compassionate care provided during her illness. Yvonne Eure Aucoin’s legacy as an educator, friend, and community member will be cherished by all who knew her.
