A devastating scooter collision in North Kuta, Bali, has resulted in the death of Australian man Bryce Alexander Black and left his partner, Samantha Baillie, fighting for her life. The couple, who are both 33 years old and residents of New South Wales’ Central Coast, were struck head-on by a vehicle while riding a scooter at approximately 4:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 15, 2024.
Mr. Black, a father, tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene on Petitenget Street, as confirmed by the law firm Bali Legals. Ms. Baillie, a mother of two, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, facing life-threatening injuries.
A friend of Ms. Baillie, Savannah-Leigh Homer, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this harrowing time. Ms. Homer described the incident as an unimaginable tragedy, stating, “She has suffered significant injuries throughout her body, including a fractured skull with bleeding on the brain, multiple broken fingers with severe hand injuries, injuries to her pelvis, and extensive injuries to her feet.” She emphasized that Ms. Baillie is experiencing a long and uncertain recovery ahead.
The accident occurred just one day after Ms. Baillie arrived in Bali, marking her first international trip. Ms. Homer noted that this journey was intended to be a joyful milestone for the young mother, who had recently embarked on a new chapter in her life. “It was meant to be a happy milestone,” Ms. Homer said, reflecting on the family’s hopes for the trip.
As the situation unfolds, both Ms. Homer and Ms. Baillie’s mother have traveled to Bali to assist with the growing hospital expenses and to coordinate Ms. Baillie’s return to Australia. According to Ms. Homer, “We have already paid $6,000 toward her initial hospital care, and we have now been issued a further medical bill of $52,000, with more costs expected. The financial burden is overwhelming.”
By 9:30 p.m. GMT on Friday, the fundraising effort had successfully raised over $51,000, reflecting the community’s support during this tragic time. Social media has been filled with tributes honoring Mr. Black’s memory, with comments expressing disbelief and sorrow over his untimely death. One mourner conveyed, “I still can’t believe it’s happened to you,” while another stated, “Sending all the love in the world to Bryce and Sammy’s families.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia has confirmed its involvement in providing consular support to the families. A spokesperson said, “We send our deepest condolences to the families at this difficult time.”
