Wildfires continue to ravage parts of Spain, Portugal, and Greece as firefighters contend with extreme heat and dry conditions. On August 15, 2023, a public holiday in all three countries, the situation has escalated with firefighters battling multiple blazes, while temperatures are expected to rise further over the weekend.
In Spain, authorities are currently managing 14 major wildfires. Strong warnings have been issued by the national weather agency, AEMET, indicating an extreme risk of new fires. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez highlighted the severity of the situation on social media, stating, “Today will once again be a very tough day.” The ongoing heatwave has resulted in temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), and conditions are predicted to persist through the weekend.
The fires have devastated the Galicia region, compelling the closure of several highways and the suspension of high-speed rail services linking it to the capital, Madrid. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, wildfires in Spain have consumed approximately 158,000 hectares, an area comparable to metropolitan London.
Portugal is also facing significant challenges as nearly 4,000 firefighters tackle seven major wildfires. Authorities have extended the state of alert until Sunday, reflecting the persistent high temperatures and potential for further blazes.
In Greece, wildfires have been particularly severe on the island of Chios, where flames have raged uncontrollably for four consecutive days. Local authorities reported that two water-dropping planes and two helicopters have been deployed to assist in firefighting efforts, aided by a temporary lull in winds that has allowed for more effective operations.
The Greek Fire Service remains vigilant, especially in areas surrounding Athens, following earlier fires in western Greece this week. Adverse weather conditions have heightened the fire risk in these regions.
During prayers for the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, an important religious holiday for Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expressed solidarity with the victims of these devastating wildfires. His message highlighted the broader impact of the crisis, affecting communities across southern Europe.
As the situation develops, the focus remains on firefighting efforts and the safety of residents in the affected areas. With the heatwave showing no signs of abating, authorities are urging vigilance as they work to contain the ongoing blazes.
