Maduro Celebrates Rally as Deportation Flights Resume to Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was seen dancing at a rally in Caracas on March 4, 2024, as deportation flights from the United States to Venezuela are set to resume. This occurs despite ongoing tensions between Maduro’s government and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The event celebrated newly elected Venezuelan leaders, and Maduro’s performance included a song with lyrics emphasizing peace over war.

During the rally, Maduro reaffirmed his commitment to the Venezuelan people, stating, “Just as I swore before the body of our commander [Hugo] Chávez, I now swear to you absolute loyalty beyond this life.” He expressed his determination to remain steadfast against perceived American aggression, promising never to betray his country. Maduro was accompanied by his wife, Cilia Flores, who donned a cap with the slogan, “Doubt is Betrayal.”

A recent brief phone call between Maduro and Trump has raised eyebrows. In the conversation, Maduro reportedly expressed a willingness to leave Venezuela if he and his family were granted full legal amnesty. The call lasted less than 15 minutes, and Trump largely denied Maduro’s requests. The deadline for Maduro to act on any agreement expired on March 1, 2024.

In response to the situation, Trump has intensified threats against Maduro’s regime, suggesting a potential ground invasion is possible as the U.S. increases its amphibious forces in the Caribbean. Over the weekend, Trump declared Venezuela’s airspace closed, which, while not an official authority, has resulted in a significant reduction in air traffic over the country.

This declaration has raised concerns regarding the deportation flights that have taken place twice a week this year. Following an agreement between Maduro and Trump, more than 13,000 migrants have been deported to Venezuela in chartered flights. The most recent flight arrived on March 1, just before Trump’s airspace command took effect.

On March 5, Maduro confirmed the resumption of deportation flights after Eastern Airlines submitted an application for an upcoming flight scheduled for March 6. The situation continues to evolve as both leaders navigate the complexities of their relationship amid international scrutiny.
