Lane Closures Planned on I-476 for High-Tech Upgrades

Drivers on Interstate 476 in Pennsylvania should brace for daytime lane closures next week as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) initiates significant upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety. Starting on January 5 and continuing through January 8, 2024, work will take place on northbound I-476, impacting a stretch from the Media/Swarthmore Interchange at Exit 3 to the Plush Mill Road overpass.

During the work hours between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, a lane closure will be in effect. PennDOT anticipates that these closures will lead to substantial backups and delays, urging motorists to plan for extra travel time. All work is contingent on weather conditions.

Details of the High-Tech Overhaul

The lane closures are part of a larger $10.4 million project aimed at installing advanced traffic management systems over approximately 14.5 miles of I-476, which runs through both Delaware and Montgomery counties. The upgrades include the installation of Variable Speed Limit and Queue Warning systems, which are designed to enhance safety and alleviate congestion.

The fiber repair work is essential for the implementation of an Intelligent Transportation System that will feature new conduits, queue detectors, variable speed limit signage, dynamic message boards, and other supporting technologies. Once these systems are fully operational, they will be managed from PennDOT’s new Regional Transportation Management Center.

Variable Speed Limit systems will adjust speed limits in real time based on various factors, including traffic flow, roadway conditions, and weather. This capability is intended to provide drivers with timely warnings and facilitate smoother traffic during periods of congestion. Meanwhile, Queue Warning systems will issue electronic alerts when traffic slowdowns are detected, aiming to reduce instances of sudden braking and rear-end collisions.

The project is being executed by Kuharchik Construction Inc., based in Exeter, and is fully funded by federal dollars. With the lane closures affecting a heavily trafficked section of the Blue Route, PennDOT strongly recommends that drivers plan their routes in advance.
