Nine people were killed and at least ten others were injured in a shooting at a pub in South Africa’s Bekkersdal township early on Sunday. The attack occurred just before 1 a.m. local time at the KwaNoxolo tavern, located approximately 46 kilometers (28 miles) west of Johannesburg. According to authorities, a group of gunmen fired on patrons before fleeing the scene in a white mini-bus and a silver sedan.
Witnesses reported chaos as unknown assailants indiscriminately shot at individuals both inside and outside the establishment. Among the deceased was a driver from an online car-hailing service who was outside the pub at the time of the shooting. The police indicated that some victims were shot in the streets as they attempted to escape the violence.
Investigation Underway
In response to the incident, the Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit has launched a manhunt for the suspects involved. This shooting marks the second mass shooting in South Africa within three weeks, raising concerns about escalating gun violence in the country.
Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana, the provincial police commissioner, spoke to SABC television about the incident, emphasizing the need for urgent action to address the alarming trend of mass shootings at bars, often referred to as shebeens or taverns in South Africa. Earlier this month, a similar attack at an unlicensed bar near Pretoria resulted in at least twelve fatalities and thirteen injuries.

Firearms are the primary means of homicide, despite the country having relatively stringent gun control laws.
