The European Union is advancing a proposal to establish a “drone wall” along its eastern borders to counter the increasing threat of unmanned aircraft from Russia. This defensive initiative aims to enhance security in light of recent drone incursions into European airspace. The plan will be discussed on September 27, 2023, in Copenhagen, where leaders from the 27-nation bloc will convene to address trade and defense issues.
Urgency Following Recent Incursions
The concept of a drone wall was introduced by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, during her annual state of the union address last month. The proposal gained immediate relevance as Russian drones entered Polish airspace on the same day of her speech. Subsequent incursions included a Russian drone reported over Romania and Russian fighter jets entering Estonian airspace.
In response to these threats, a preliminary planning meeting was held last week, involving representatives from several countries bordering Russia, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Finland. Denmark, which currently holds the EU presidency, also participated in the discussions.
