Yankees Release Stroman As Gil’s Return Looms This Weekend

UPDATE: The New York Yankees have just released right-hander Marcus Stroman, marking a sudden end to his disappointing stint with the team. This move comes as Luis Gil is set to make his much-anticipated return from the injured list on Sunday against the Miami Marlins.

Stroman, who was signed to a $37 million deal over two years, will not complete his contract as the Yankees have decided to pay the remaining $18 million of his salary. The 32-year-old pitcher has struggled this season, posting a 6.23 ERA over nine starts, and with just 39 innings pitched by August 1, he fell short of the 140 innings needed to trigger an option for 2026, making him a free agent this offseason.

The Yankees’ decision comes amid a shake-up in their starting rotation. With Gil returning, the team will now consist of Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Gil, Will Warren, and rookie Cam Schlittler, who has impressed management enough to secure a rotation spot over Stroman.

Stroman’s final appearance as a Yankee was on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays, where he allowed four runs on six hits over five innings. His season has been marred by injuries, including a significant period on the injured list due to a left knee injury. Initially, he was brought into the rotation due to injuries to other pitchers, including Gerrit Cole.

The Yankees have also bolstered their bullpen with three new relievers acquired at the recent trade deadline. Moving Stroman to the bullpen was dismissed as an option, especially after he expressed reluctance to accept a relief role earlier in the season.

As the Yankees prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Marlins, the focus will be on how Gil performs in his return and how the team’s rotation adjusts without Stroman. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching these developments as the Yankees aim to regain momentum in the season.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
