UPDATE: X (formerly Twitter) has just launched a controversial new feature that discloses user locations, igniting significant backlash from users concerned about privacy. This feature, which rolled out over the weekend, allows anyone to view the region and country of accounts, particularly those frequently discussing American politics.
In a post on X, Head of Product Nikita Bier announced the global rollout, highlighting that users can access this information by tapping the signup date on profiles. “This will be accessible by tapping the signup date on profiles. This is an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square,” Bier stated. He emphasized the platform’s commitment to improving content authenticity and indicated plans for additional verification methods in the future.
However, the introduction of this feature has raised alarms, especially among users in countries with restrictive speech laws. Bier reassured these users that privacy toggles have been implemented to limit visibility to only their region. “For those in countries where speech has penalties, we’ve included privacy toggles to only show your region,” he added.
The new feature has already revealed surprising insights. Many users discovered that accounts supporting Donald Trump and the MAGA campaign are not based in the United States. For example, an account named MAGA Nation, which posts frequently about American politics, was created in April 2024 and is registered in Eastern Europe. This account has undergone five username changes, with the last occurring in September 2025.
Similar accounts have been identified as originating from countries like Bangladesh and India, raising questions about the authenticity of political discourse on the platform.
As the implications of this new feature unfold, users are urged to consider the privacy risks involved in revealing their locations. The reaction online has been swift, with many advocating for stronger privacy protections and expressing fears over the potential for misuse of this information.
This developing story highlights the ongoing tension between transparency and privacy in social media. As X moves forward with this feature, users will be watching closely to see how it impacts discourse and user safety on the platform. Stay tuned for more updates as this situation evolves.
