UPDATE: A community vigil unfolded Sunday evening at Lippitt Memorial Park, honoring the victims of a tragic shooting at Brown University that left two dead and nine injured during final exams. The event, initially planned as a holiday lighting ceremony, transformed into a poignant memorial as attendees brought flowers, lit candles, and shared prayers.

The shooting occurred on December 9, 2023, when the gunman opened fire inside the Barus & Holley building, striking students amidst exam preparations. Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez confirmed that there are currently no other suspects being sought, although the investigation is ongoing. The FBI, alongside local law enforcement, maintains a presence at the Coventry hotel, conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

During the vigil, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley addressed the crowd, emphasizing the community’s resilience in the face of tragedy. He stated, “In a moment marked by fear and heartbreak, we chose to come together,” highlighting that the light of the holiday season would guide the community forward through this dark chapter.

Brown University released a statement expressing condolences, urging faculty and staff to prioritize their well-being during this difficult time. The Vice President for Human Resources, Marie Williams, reiterated the university’s commitment to supporting students and families affected by the shooting.

As the community grapples with this horrific incident, the investigation continues to unfold. Authorities are keen to ensure the safety of the campus while determining the full scope of the tragedy that has shaken the Brown University community.
