Urgent: Yonkers Garage Condemnation Forces Drivers to Relocate Vehicles

UPDATE: A condemned parking garage in Yonkers has left drivers scrambling to relocate their vehicles before a Friday deadline. Inspections revealed multiple structural issues, prompting immediate action from city officials.

Residents are expressing frustration as they face the sudden closure of the garage located at 30 Hawthorne Ave.. One motorbike owner, who searched for a safe storage solution on Christmas Eve, stated, “It has been rough, with only like two days’ notice.”

City inspectors Joe Ferrotta and Pat Losco confirmed the garage was deemed unsafe just three days ago. They visited the site on Wednesday to ensure that vehicles could exit but not enter. “I’d rather have the cars out than have the thing collapse,” Losco emphasized, acknowledging that while the danger is not imminent, the risks are significant.

Inspection findings included “exposed rebar” and “extensive cracking” throughout the structure. New York law mandates that garage owners complete professional inspections every three years and submit reports to local authorities. However, the owner, MPG, failed to comply with these regulations and did not secure necessary permits for ongoing repairs.

Social media has played a vital role in addressing this crisis. Resident Janique Breland posted images of falling concrete, which spurred city officials to act. “I’m happy my post prompted a response,” she said, adding she will pay an additional $60 to park her car safely elsewhere. “I know I won’t be trapped.”

While signs indicating upcoming renovations have been posted, sources indicate that city officials would not be surprised if the garage is ultimately demolished. As residents navigate this unexpected situation, the focus remains on ensuring that vehicles are moved promptly and safely.

Drivers must act quickly to avoid being stranded, as the city prepares for further developments. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing situation.
