URGENT UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has been issued for Northern Michigan, warning residents of potentially hazardous conditions with snow accumulations of up to 5 inches. The advisory, confirmed by the National Weather Service, is effective from 10 p.m. EST today until 4 p.m. EST on Wednesday.
Counties affected include Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Alcona, Wexford, Missaukee, Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin, and Arenac. Authorities urge residents to prepare for slick roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses, which are expected to become dangerous.
The National Weather Service cautions that “total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches” will create treacherous driving conditions. “Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving,” they recommend. The advisory highlights the serious risks associated with winter weather, noting that over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities occur annually in the U.S. due to similar conditions.
Travelers are urged to take extra precautions. If you must drive, it’s crucial to stay alert to changing road conditions, as icy surfaces can lead to falls and accidents. “These surfaces could be icy and slippery,” warns the weather service, underscoring the importance of careful navigation.
As the storm approaches, residents are encouraged to share their travel plans with family or friends and ensure their vehicles are equipped with essential winter supplies such as a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, and extra warm clothing. Keeping your gas tank full is also critical for safety during these conditions.
In case of becoming stranded, remain calm and notify someone of your situation. It is advised not to attempt walking to safety. Instead, signal for help by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror and use your vehicle’s dome light and flashers to increase visibility.
Additionally, keep a careful watch for snow plows on the roads and allow them ample space to operate. Only overtake a plow when it is safe to do so.
The weather service emphasizes checking current road conditions before starting your journey, which can significantly impact your travel safety. As conditions rapidly evolve, stay safe and informed to minimize risks during this winter weather event.
Residents are urged to stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops and act swiftly to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones. Share this information to help others stay informed about the imminent winter weather.
