BREAKING: A New Jersey firefighter heroically rescued a man from near-freezing ocean waters on December 31, 2023, despite being attacked with a screwdriver during the operation. The dramatic scene unfolded around 12:30 p.m. at Rhode Island Avenue Beach in Atlantic City, where local firefighters and police quickly responded to a distress call.
When emergency units arrived, they found 31-year-old Christopher Treadway floating in the frigid waters, seemingly conscious but “not actively swimming,” according to police reports. Rookie firefighter Dominic Gitto bravely entered the ocean wearing a dry suit, equipped with a longboard to assist Treadway. However, as Gitto approached, Treadway attempted to stab him with a concealed screwdriver, escalating the dangerous situation.
Despite the aggressive behavior, Gitto skillfully evaded the attack and continued his life-saving efforts. Other rescue workers joined in, forming a human chain to pull Treadway toward shore. Their determination paid off, and they finally brought him into shallow waters. However, Treadway’s combative actions persisted even on land, where he was subdued by police and taken into custody.
Gitto, whose dry suit began to take on water during the rescue, was later treated for acute hypothermia at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and released later that day. Treadway was also transported for medical treatment and admitted to a psychiatric unit for evaluation, with authorities stating his actions appeared consistent with a psychiatric episode.
Treadway now faces serious charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, resisting arrest, and obstruction.
“This was an extremely dangerous and unpredictable rescue,” said Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans, praising Gitto’s courage and professionalism. The firefighter had only been with the department for a few months but demonstrated remarkable bravery in a critical situation.
The Atlantic City Firefighters Union commended Gitto’s actions on social media, stating, “a life was definitely saved” alongside a photo of the intense rescue.
As authorities continue to assess Treadway’s mental state, the community reflects on the heroism displayed by Gitto and his fellow rescuers during this life-threatening incident. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
