UPDATE: A child is recovering after being dramatically rescued from under a crashed helicopter at a fundraising event in Huntington Beach, California. Shocking footage reveals the heart-stopping moment as bystanders rushed to pull the child from beneath the wreckage of a Bell 222 helicopter that crashed during the Cars ‘N Copters event on October 15, 2023.
Officials confirmed that five individuals were hospitalized following the incident, which occurred when the helicopter spiraled out of control and crashed onto a flight of stairs near a pedestrian bridge across from the Hyatt hotel. Eyewitness video obtained by KTLA5 shows the helicopter descending rapidly before it became wedged between a tree and the steps.
The helicopter’s tail rotor appears to have stopped spinning, leading to the catastrophic crash. Amid the chaos, bystanders can be heard shouting as they sprint to the scene, desperately working to free what looked like a young boy trapped beneath the twisted aircraft.
A spokesperson for the Huntington Beach police stated that two people were aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash. Both have survived, but pilot Eric Nixon is currently hospitalized with serious injuries, including broken ribs and crushed vertebrae. His father-in-law, Jerry Miller, confirmed Nixon’s condition to the Orange County Register.
Three additional individuals on the ground were injured in the incident, with their conditions yet to be disclosed. Emergency services quickly responded, and all injured parties were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and are launching investigations into the crash. City officials have expressed their concern for the victims and are closely monitoring the situation.
This urgent incident highlights the potential dangers associated with aerial events, even during community fundraising activities. As investigations continue, the community is left shaken but grateful for the swift actions of those who rushed to help.
