UPDATE: Work has officially begun on the demolition of the old staff accommodation at North Devon District Hospital, marking a significant step forward for healthcare in the region. This project is funded by a substantial £22.7 million from the Government’s New Hospital Programme, aimed at replacing outdated facilities with modern residences for NHS staff.
The demolition will make way for new staff housing that will feature 120 ensuite bedrooms, including four fully accessible family apartments and six single fully accessible ensuite rooms. Residents will benefit from shared kitchen, living, and dining areas, along with various amenity spaces, enhancing the living experience for those working at the Barnstaple site.
Local MP Ian Roome visited the site today, November 21, 2023, describing the demolition as “a really important first step” in the Our Future Hospital Programme. He emphasized the urgency for further investment, stating, “It frees up the land we need for the next phases after all the hard campaigning for proper investment.” Roome expressed pride in witnessing the old buildings, which have stood since 1978, come down, noting the importance of modern facilities for staff and patients alike.
Despite the positive development, concerns linger regarding the hospital’s future. Earlier this year, the facility lost out on funding for a comprehensive rebuild, which has now been postponed by the current government until at least 2035. Roome is advocating for immediate upgrades to crucial areas like the ICU, operating theatres, and a new MRI suite, further emphasizing the need to maintain pressure for enhanced healthcare services.
The Royal Devon trust leaders echo Roome’s sentiments. Deputy Chief Executive Officer Chris Tidman remarked, “This is an important step in the Our Future Hospital Programme and marks a significant investment in the future of North Devon District Hospital.” He underscored the redevelopment’s essential role in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals, ensuring the hospital’s continued excellence in service delivery.
However, the construction phase is not without its drawbacks. The trust has acknowledged potential temporary disruptions, including parking restrictions in the main patient car park. This has already drawn complaints from local residents, who have reported difficulty finding parking when visiting the hospital.
As the demolition progresses, the community remains hopeful for a revitalized healthcare environment. The project not only signifies a commitment to improving facilities but also aims to create a more appealing and functional space for both staff and patients.
Stay tuned for further updates as the transformation of North Devon District Hospital unfolds. This redevelopment is a crucial milestone in the journey towards enhanced healthcare services in the region.
