UPDATE: As the holiday season approaches, Creston residents are urged to follow new recycling guidelines to ensure a sustainable celebration. With Christmas just around the corner, Waste Management of Iowa has issued critical advice on how to properly manage leftover wrapping paper, decorations, and more.
“We are committed to helping Creston have a successful and sustainable holiday season,” said WM Recycling Operations Director Matt McGurn. He emphasized the importance of adhering to specific recycling protocols to promote a strong circular economy. Residents are encouraged to reuse or donate items like ribbons, bows, and tissue paper whenever possible.
This year, many families will face confusion over what to recycle after unwrapping presents. Here’s what you need to know:
– **Wrapping Paper:** Only plain wrapping paper is recyclable. Avoid placing wrapping paper with foil, glitter, or plastic coatings in the recycling bin. Instead, consider alternatives like newspaper or old fabric for future gifts.
– **Holiday Bags:** Treat holiday bags like wrapping paper. Plain paper bags can be recycled, but glossy or glittery bags must be reused.
– **Ribbons and Bows:** These festive items are not recyclable. Residents should opt to reuse or donate them.
– **Tissue Paper:** Unfortunately, tissue paper is also not recyclable. It can be saved for future use, perhaps for birthdays or other celebrations.
– **Holiday Lights:** Do not recycle holiday lights in your curbside bin. Focus on reusing these items to support sustainability efforts.
As the season progresses, it’s essential to note that trash and recycling pickups will be affected by the holidays. Pickup for those with a Thursday schedule will shift to Friday, and recycling will be completed on Saturday. Normal service will resume on January 5, 2024.
By following these guidelines, Creston residents can contribute to a greener holiday season while maintaining the joy of gift-giving. Share this important information with your neighbors to help spread awareness and drive community engagement.
