URGENT UPDATE: A hands-on baking workshop celebrating Finland’s cherished coffee bread, known as pulla, is set to take place on January 25, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Finnish Center at Saima Park in Fitchburg. This event promises to be a delightful cultural experience for baking enthusiasts and food lovers alike.
Participants will learn to create this lightly sweetened cardamom bread and its regional variations, including the traditional braided nisu and the popular Finnish cinnamon rolls known as korvapuusti. Finland native Saija Laurla will lead the workshop, sharing her expertise and personal stories about the significance of this beloved recipe.
This beloved treat is known across Finland under different names, but all variations are celebrated. Laurla emphasizes that regardless of the name, the joy of baking and sharing this bread connects people. “For some bakers, nisu is the braided version of this delicacy,” Laurla stated. “Whichever name you use, we invite you to celebrate it with us — and bake it.”
The workshop not only offers a chance to learn but also fosters community spirit. With a maximum capacity of 40 participants, early registration is encouraged. The cost is $25 for members of the Finnish Center and $30 for non-members.
