UPDATE: A tragic UPS cargo plane crash near Louisville has claimed at least 12 lives and left a path of destruction in an industrial area. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday. New satellite images reveal extensive damage to businesses and warehouses just three miles south of the airport.
The crash involved a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 operating as Flight 2976, which was en route to Honolulu. Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that the plane’s left engine detached during takeoff, contributing to the catastrophic crash. Eyewitness videos show the plane banking sharply to the left before it was engulfed in flames.
The incident resulted in the shutdown of the airport, leading to dozens of flight cancellations as passengers faced significant delays. The airport resumed operations on Wednesday, but the aftermath of the crash left many stranded.
As of Thursday afternoon, authorities report that at least nine people remain unaccounted for amid ongoing recovery efforts. Smoke blanketed the area for hours following the crash, prompting a shelter-in-place order for a five-mile radius around the airport, which has since been reduced.
Satellite images provided by Vantor show the extensive damage, including a striking 295-foot gash in a UPS warehouse roof. The crash site is a stark reminder of the devastation, with a trail of damage stretching approximately 2,800 feet. Notable businesses affected include Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Auto Parts.
Emergency responders worked tirelessly to contain the ensuing fire, which was fueled by approximately 220,000 pounds (about 38,000 gallons) of jet fuel on board the aircraft. The fireball and smoke plume were visible for miles around.
NTSB official J. Todd Inman reported that CCTV footage confirmed the detachment of the left engine during the takeoff roll. A former MD-11 pilot explained that while it is rare, the engine’s design allows for it to shear off during intense vibration, preventing further damage to the aircraft.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with officials urging anyone with information to come forward. The human impact is profound, as families mourn their loved ones and the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event.
As recovery efforts continue, all eyes are on the NTSB for further updates on the investigation. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.
