UPDATE: Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia, marked its historic 75th anniversary with a poignant reception on January 6, 2026. University President Kurt Stringfellow addressed attendees, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to education and community empowerment.
The celebration featured notable speaker Rosemarye Boykins, the first African American graduate from the university, who shared her journey from Birdwood Junior College in 1969. Boykins expressed gratitude for her education and highlighted the support from her late husband, Samuel Boykins. “Education is the key to everything,” she declared, underscoring the significance of knowledge for future generations.
Boykins paid homage to the mentors who shaped her academic career, including Emily Neal Caldwell and Adabelle Williams. “To be the first of anything is an incredible honor, but also a responsibility,” she stated, recognizing the barriers she faced as a pioneer. Her achievements symbolize hope and opportunity for African Americans in the community.
Following Boykins, Clint Kadel, chairman of the Board of Trustees, reaffirmed the university’s mission amidst evolving educational challenges. “We are not defined by our challenges, but by our commitment to overcome them together,” Kadel said, inspiring the audience to look forward to the next 75 years.
The event concluded with a resolution from State Representative Darlene Taylor, recognizing the university’s contributions to the community. “The future of Thomas University is bright,” Stringfellow remarked, reiterating the institution’s goal to become the top private university in Georgia.
