Sophie Cunningham Injured, Leaves Game Early in Pain

URGENT UPDATE: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham suffered a frightening right knee injury during the game against the Connecticut Sun on August 13, 2023. The injury occurred early in the second quarter, forcing Cunningham to leave the court in visible distress.

Cunningham was injured when Bria Hartley of the Sun collided into her while attempting a pass. As Hartley turned the ball over to teammate Lexie Hull, she lost her footing and fell directly onto Cunningham’s leg. The incident left Cunningham hopping in pain before she was escorted off the court by trainers, draped in a towel.

The Fever confirmed that Cunningham was ruled out for the remainder of the game, but the full extent of her injury remains unknown, raising concerns among fans and teammates. Just moments before her injury, Cunningham had not scored, missing all three field goal attempts, but had registered one rebound and one turnover.

In a troubling trend for the Fever, Caitlin Clark, another star guard, is currently sidelined with a groin injury. Additionally, Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald have both been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season due to serious injuries, including Colson’s torn ACL and McDonald’s broken foot.

The Fever, now struggling with injuries, currently hold the seventh seed in the WNBA standings at 18-16, with playoff hopes on the line. Fans are anxiously awaiting updates on Cunningham’s condition, hoping for the best as her pain was clearly evident.

As the team navigates this challenging situation, all eyes will be on the Fever’s next moves and any updates regarding Cunningham’s health. The urgency of the situation has heightened as every game counts in their pursuit of a playoff spot.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Fever aim to overcome not just injuries, but also the pressure of the ongoing season.
