The San Jose Sharks will have a notable presence at the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympic Games, with forward Pavol Regenda officially named to Slovakia’s roster for the men’s hockey tournament. The 2024 Games, taking place next month, will see Regenda joined by fellow Sharks players Philipp Kurashev (Switzerland), Alexander Wennberg (Sweden), and Macklin Celebrini (Canada), highlighting the team’s international representation.
Regenda, 26, has had a limited role with the Sharks this season, appearing in just six games. Nonetheless, he has made a significant impact, scoring all three of the Sharks’ goals during a recent 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, marking his first career hat trick. His season total stands at six goals, including another in a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier this week.
Regenda’s Path to the Olympics
Throughout this season, Regenda has primarily played for the San Jose Barracuda in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he has accumulated four goals and eight assists over 28 games. After being called up for his second stint with the Sharks on December 30, 2023, he quickly proved his worth on the ice.
This will not be Regenda’s first Olympic experience, as he previously earned a bronze medal with Slovakia at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where he contributed one goal and three assists. Over the years, he has also represented Slovakia in four consecutive World Championships, scoring nine goals in 29 games.
Regenda joined the Sharks through a trade with the Anaheim Ducks in January 2023, where he was exchanged for forward Justin Bailey.
Olympic Competition Ahead
The men’s hockey tournament at the Milan Cortina Olympic Games will kick off with the preliminary round on February 11, 2024. Regenda’s Slovakia will face Finland, while Wennberg’s Sweden will compete against host nation Italy. The following day, Kurashev’s Switzerland and Celebrini’s Canada, along with the United States, will also begin their tournament journeys.
With the Sharks players making their mark on the international stage, fans will be eager to follow their progress as they strive for Olympic glory. The blend of talent and experience among these athletes promises an exciting tournament ahead.
