UPDATE: The Ottawa Senators delivered a decisive blow to the Columbus Blue Jackets with a 4-1 victory on Thursday night, effectively ending the Blue Jackets’ four-game winning streak. This crucial win marks a turnaround for the Senators, who had been struggling with two consecutive losses.
In a performance that dazzled fans at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Tyler Kleven and Tim Stutzle ignited the scoring early, with Kleven netting the opening goal just 3:34 into the first period. Stutzle followed up with a critical goal of his own, giving Ottawa a lead they would not relinquish.
The Senators’ offense was bolstered by Ridly Greig, who contributed a goal and an assist, and Thomas Chabot, who tallied two assists. Notably, James Reimer secured his first win as a Senator, making 21 saves after signing with the team as a free agent on January 12.
The game took a concerning turn when Blue Jackets’ goaltender Elvis Merzlikins departed in the second period due to illness after stopping just five shots. He was replaced by Jet Greaves, who managed to halt 12 shots in his relief effort.
After Kleven opened the scoring, Sean Monahan temporarily leveled the game for Columbus at 7:46 with his first goal in seven games. However, Stutzle quickly restored Ottawa’s lead just 2:29 later, putting the Senators back on track.
The second period saw no scoring, but Greig struck again with an insurance goal at 6:49 in the third period. A late empty-net goal from Brady Tkachuk solidified the Senators’ victory at 3:06 remaining.
Looking ahead, the Senators will face the Nashville Predators next Thursday, while the Blue Jackets are set to host the Dallas Stars on the same day.
This significant victory for Ottawa not only boosts team morale but also sets up a critical matchup in their upcoming schedule. Fans are eager to see if the Senators can maintain this momentum as they head into Nashville.
