UPDATE: Ronald Acuña Jr. stunned the New York Yankees with a jaw-dropping 301-foot outfield assist during the Atlanta Braves’ 7-3 victory on Friday night. The play occurred in the third inning, catching everyone off-guard as Acuña fired a perfect throw to third base, cutting down Jorbit Vivas, who was attempting to tag up on a deep fly ball.
Acuña’s remarkable throw is not only the longest outfield assist of the season but also the first throw over 300 feet without a bounce since Mookie Betts achieved a 302-foot throw in 2020. The Braves’ right fielder made the throw with his back to the infield, demonstrating incredible skill and strength.
Braves manager Brian Snitker praised Acuña’s talent, stating, “His accuracy is stupid. He’s a weapon in right field. His arm is so strong and accurate, and the ball carries.” The throw reached third base just in time for Nacho Alvarez Jr. to tag a slowing Vivas, who ignored the third-base coach’s signal to slide.
“I just always try to anticipate those plays,” Acuña explained through an interpreter. “That’s really what I always try to focus on, anticipating the play before it happens. Thankfully, I have a good arm.”
The Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone commented on the play, emphasizing that Vivas was “deke[d]” by Alvarez’s body language. Boone reflected, “That’s a lesson that can’t happen on a baseball field, especially in that situation.” Vivas’s failure to run hard could have resulted in a safe call had he not hesitated.
This assist marks the longest throw to complete a double play since 2021, further showcasing Acuña’s elite defensive capabilities. The Braves are gaining momentum as they continue their series against the Yankees, and Acuña’s performance highlights the excitement of the game.
As the MLB season progresses, all eyes will be on Acuña and the Braves as they aim for continued success. Fans and analysts alike will be watching for more spectacular moments like this throughout the remainder of the season.
