Rocklin Schools Ban Class 2 E-Bikes Amid Safety Concerns

UPDATE: The Rocklin Unified School District has just announced a ban on Class 2 e-bikes, effective February 2, 2026, due to alarming safety concerns. This decision impacts students across 12 elementary schools and 2 middle schools in Rocklin, California, affecting hundreds of families.

The ban specifically targets e-bikes equipped with throttles, which can reach speeds up to 20 mph. Reports from officials indicate a worrying rise in reckless riding and accidents among students using these faster e-bikes to commute. Rocklin Police Chief Rustin Banks emphasized, “We’ve had some really, really close calls here,” highlighting the urgency of the situation.

This decision comes in response to a significant increase in injuries and crashes over the past two years, alarming both school and law enforcement officials. Despite efforts to educate families about safe riding practices, the district and police have determined that stricter measures are necessary to protect students.

Students like Ben Higbee, age 13, voice their frustrations, stating, “I don’t really like it. I don’t know how I’m going to get to school some days because my parents are working.” The emotional impact of this ban is felt broadly, as many students relied on e-bikes for transportation.

The phased implementation plan begins with an education and grace period in December 2025, focusing on informing students and families about the new policy. Starting in January 2026, a warning phase will allow students found with non-compliant e-bikes to receive warnings before full enforcement kicks in on February 2, 2026. Enforcement measures include warnings, detention, and required parent meetings with school administration and police.

In a bid to maintain safety while providing transportation options, the district encourages families to consider traditional bicycles as an alternative. Chief of Communications Sundeep Dosanjh stated, “We strive to provide the best educational experience for all of our students and families in Rockland Unified.”

This ban is a critical response to ensure the safety of young riders in Rocklin. Families are urged to rethink potential e-bike purchases, especially with the holiday shopping season approaching. The district is committed to sharing this information promptly to prepare families for the upcoming changes.

As the situation develops, parents and students are encouraged to stay informed about the enforcement timeline and safety education initiatives. The Rocklin Unified School District’s proactive approach underscores the pressing need for safe transportation solutions for students.
