Richard Trank Launches Sea Point Films After Leaving SWC

URGENT UPDATE: Oscar-winning filmmaker Richard Trank has officially left the Simon Wiesenthal Center to launch his new production company, Sea Point Films and Media. This monumental shift, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, marks a new chapter in Trank’s illustrious career, which has spanned decades and has been heavily tied to the SWC’s Moriah Films division.

Trank is already making waves with three documentaries currently in development. Two projects, Always 28 and The Road Home, are in production, while a third, Toto & Coco, is in the works. The urgency of these upcoming films is heightened by their powerful narratives.

Always 28 tells the heartbreaking story of Nathan B. Baskind, a Jewish-American soldier who was captured by Nazis during D-Day and died in their custody. This film follows a nonprofit organization’s quest to locate his remains and bring him home. Meanwhile, The Road Home addresses the resilience of Israelis following the deadly attacks on October 7, 2023, which are noted as the most devastating against Jews since the Holocaust. It features interviews with survivors, hostages, and specialists who aided them in reintegrating into society.

Additionally, Toto & Coco, based on a bestselling 2020 book, focuses on the life of Toto Koopman, a biracial and queer Vogue model who became a World War II spy. This film also explores her association with Nazi sympathizer Coco Chanel, offering a unique perspective on a complex historical narrative.

Trank, an Angeleno with a B.A. from UC-Berkeley and graduate work at USC, is renowned for his 1997 documentary, The Long Way Home, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. His extensive filmography includes titles like Echoes That Remain, In Search of Peace, and Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny. Throughout his career, Trank has interviewed a plethora of influential figures, including Israeli Prime Ministers and American Presidents, highlighting his significant connections in the industry.

This transition to Sea Point Films and Media marks not just a change in Trank’s career but signals a fresh approach to storytelling in the documentary and narrative film sectors. The urgent themes present in his upcoming projects are intended to resonate deeply with audiences, making this launch a significant moment in contemporary filmmaking.

As Trank embarks on this new venture, the film community and audiences worldwide are watching closely. What will come next from this acclaimed filmmaker? Stay tuned for updates as Sea Point Films and Media prepares to unveil its impactful projects.
