A recent breakthrough in PlayStation 5 (PS5) jailbreaking, which initially appeared promising, is now facing significant challenges. The exploit, which relies on the PS4 version of Star Wars: Racer Revenge, caused a surge in prices for the game in the secondhand market. However, it now seems the jailbreak may not be as viable as first thought.
The exploit operates in two stages. First, an in-game vulnerability in Racer Revenge is used to load a tool called Luac0re, a derivative of a previous exploit known as mast1c0re. This tool is designed to enable deeper kernel-level modifications on the console. While the initial demonstration of this process maintained its functionality, modder Gezine has indicated that Sony has effectively blocked access to the next phase of the jailbreak. This blockage occurred around the release of the PS5 firmware versions 8.xx, which began rolling out in 2023.
Luac0re was intended to facilitate a kernel-level exploit over the network, completing the jailbreak process. Unfortunately, this capability appears to be unavailable on any of the firmware updates released in recent years. While Luac0re remains effective on older PS5 firmware, existing alternate jailbreaks are already accessible for those versions. Additionally, it continues to function on current PS4 firmware, maintaining access to the necessary vulnerability for kernel-level modifications.
For those who recently purchased Star Wars: Racer Revenge and are hoping to capitalize on its inflated market value, the window of opportunity may be closing. As the likelihood of discovering an alternative method to utilize Luac0re diminishes, the exploit’s overall usefulness is becoming increasingly limited.
Given these developments, individuals looking to sell their copies of the game before prices potentially decline should consider acting swiftly. The excitement surrounding new Star Wars games continues, but the anticipated breakthrough in PS5 jailbreaking may not play out as initially expected.
