Oklahoma City Council Approves Urgent $2.7 Billion Bond for October Vote

UPDATE: The Oklahoma City Council has just approved a transformative $2.7 billion general bond that will be put to a vote on October 14, 2023. This critical funding initiative, which will not raise property tax rates, aims to address urgent infrastructural needs across the city.

With a staggering 76% of the proposed 547 projects classified as critical infrastructure, the bond focuses heavily on enhancing streets, bridges, and traffic systems. City Manager Craig Freeman emphasized the bond’s importance, stating, “Oklahoma City’s bond programs are one of our most important tools for maintaining and improving the City’s core infrastructure.”

Voters must register by September 19 to participate in this pivotal election, making it crucial for residents to act quickly.

The bond package encompasses 11 separate propositions, allocating funds as follows:

– **$1.35 billion for Streets:** This includes 382 total street projects, focusing on residential resurfacing, street widening, and arterial improvements.

– **$414.29 million for Parks & Recreational Facilities:** Funding will support renovations and expansions at notable sites such as the Hefner Golf Clubhouse and the Civic Center Music Hall.

– **$175 million for Economic & Community Development:** Aimed at citywide economic growth and affordable housing initiatives.

– **$140.44 million for Drainage Control:** This will fund 44 drainage improvement projects to mitigate flooding risks.

– **$130 million for Fire Facilities:** Including the construction of new stations and a training center for emergency personnel.

– **$129.67 million for Transit:** Improvements will modernize the transit fleet and enhance facilities, including a new transit headquarters.

– **$107.34 million for Public Safety Facilities:** Projects include a new police facility and enhancements to existing public safety structures.

– **$90.6 million for Bridges:** Funding for 25 bridge projects to improve safety and connectivity.

– **$81 million for Traffic Systems:** Enhancements include new traffic signals and intersection improvements.

– **$52.48 million for Libraries & Learning Centers:** Upgrades and expansions at multiple library locations are planned.

– **$47 million for City Maintenance, Data & Services Facilities:** Focused on upgrading city maintenance projects.

The urgency of this vote cannot be overstated. Terese Rose, chair of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, stated, “Continuing to invest in our city and maintain our infrastructure is absolutely vital.” She highlighted that this bond will significantly impact public safety, transportation, parks, and libraries, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.

As the clock ticks down to the election, residents are encouraged to engage with the process. For further details on the bond and to register to vote, visit www.keepokcmoving.com or call (405) 297-8942.
