UPDATE: Norristown has officially launched its Hometown Heroes banner program, aimed at honoring local veterans just in time for Veterans Day. The initiative, which seeks to display banners featuring images and stories of servicemembers, is set to roll out in 2026 and 2027 along key streets in the town.
This exciting program highlights the sacrifices made by local heroes like Army Spc. Walter Bartasch, a Norristown High alumnus who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969. His story, along with those of other veterans, will be showcased on light and utility poles, bringing their legacies to the forefront of the community.
Norristown aims to display a total of 160 banners, with each banner representing a different veteran. These banners will hang from May to Veterans Day each year, offering a powerful tribute to the bravery and dedication of local servicemembers.
The program was inspired by similar initiatives across Pennsylvania and is spearheaded by Anne Henning Scheuring, a former Lansdale councilwoman who has successfully implemented the program in various towns, resulting in over 500 banners statewide.
Residents can sponsor a banner for $135, and once the two-year display period concludes, the banner will be given to the sponsor, creating a personal keepsake to honor their loved one’s service. The banners will be strategically placed along Main Street (from Markley to Arch), DeKalb Street (from Lafayette to Fornance), Markley Street (from Coolidge to Main), and West Marshall Street (from Markley to Haws).
Norristown’s rich history of honoring veterans is set to grow even more significant, with residents encouraged to participate by sharing their own stories of local heroes. Each banner will feature the servicemember’s name, photo, branch of service, and the era in which they served, ensuring that their contributions to the nation are never forgotten.
As the municipality of Norristown continues to preserve its vibrant history, the upcoming Hometown Heroes program offers a meaningful way to connect the community with its past. This Veterans Day, residents are invited to join in celebrating the sacrifices made by their fellow citizens.
