UPDATE: Newark Liberty International Airport is experiencing significant flight delays due to an ongoing government shutdown that is crippling air traffic control operations. As of Sunday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented a “traffic management program” at the airport, leading to staggering delays—arrivals are averaging 1 hour and 22 minutes late, while departures are delayed by 26 minutes, according to data from FlightAware.com.
The situation has worsened since Friday, when Newark recorded a total of 348 flight delays. At 7:30 p.m. that day, arrivals were delayed by just 30 minutes, but inbound flights were already facing an average delay of 55 minutes at their points of origin.
Officials from the FAA report a critical shortage of air traffic controllers, stating that even minor absences can lead to widespread disruptions. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed that many controllers are calling in sick at alarming rates since the shutdown commenced. Duffy expressed concern that the situation will only deteriorate further after Tuesday’s payday, when many controllers will receive “a big fat zero” in their paychecks.
“The stress level that our controllers are under right now is unacceptable,” Duffy said during a press conference at Philadelphia airport on Friday. He emphasized that controllers are worried about paying their bills and are increasingly frustrated with the ongoing shutdown.
With no immediate resolution in sight, passengers should prepare for continued delays at Newark Liberty International Airport and other affected facilities across the country. This urgent situation not only impacts travel plans but also highlights the growing strain on air traffic control services as the government shutdown extends into its second week.
Travelers are advised to check flight statuses frequently and stay informed as this developing situation unfolds. As the shutdown continues, the FAA has warned that the impact on air travel could escalate rapidly, making it crucial for passengers to remain vigilant.
As the implications of this shutdown ripple through the aviation industry, keep an eye on the latest updates for further changes and developments in air travel delays.
