UPDATE: Over 200 attendees gathered today at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen to honor veterans of the Korean War during an emotional remembrance ceremony. This annual event, organized by the New Hampshire Korean-American community, serves as a powerful tribute to the shared sacrifice of soldiers from both South Korea and the United States.
The ceremony commenced at Friday afternoon, bringing together families, veterans, and dignitaries for a poignant display of solidarity. Attendees included Korean veterans, their families, and local supporters, all united in remembrance of those who fought for freedom.
Former New Hampshire Korean Veterans Association President Park Sun-woo addressed the crowd, stating, “Your attendance at these tremendous events every year … it forces all who care to never forget these vulnerable veterans.” His remarks highlighted the importance of preserving the memory of the sacrifices made during the war, often referred to as the “Forgotten War.”
Ceremony participants exchanged remembrance gifts, sang both national anthems, and recited pledges of allegiance, reinforcing the enduring bond between the two nations. Jaehui Kim, the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Boston, expressed gratitude, stating, “It is most humbling and a great privilege to stand before all of those who did so much to protect our peace.”
The Korean War, which began on June 25, 1950, resulted in over 37,000 U.S. troop fatalities and more than 500,000 South Korean casualties. The conflict marked a significant moment in history as North Korean forces invaded South Korea, prompting a swift response from the U.S. military.
U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan emphasized the collaboration between the two nations, declaring, “America answered the call to fight the forces of tyranny from the north, and together we demonstrated strength to the world.” Her statement resonates with the ongoing commitment to honor the legacy of those who fought bravely.
As memories of the Korean War remain vivid, this year’s ceremony served as a reminder of the enduring impact of these sacrifices. The New Hampshire Korean-American community continues to foster remembrance and appreciation for veterans, ensuring that their dedication is never forgotten.
As the day concludes, the community looks forward to next year’s ceremony, continuing a tradition that honors the bravery of those who fought for freedom and peace.
