UPDATE: Mount Carmel has just secured its 17th state title in a thrilling victory over Oswego, winning 20-3 in the Class 8A state championship at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb on December 3, 2025. Junior defensive back Cullen Winters delivered a game-changing moment with a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown, propelling his team to victory and solidifying their legacy.
Winters, who missed his sophomore season due to a back injury, executed a perfect block in the third quarter. “I saw the chance at a block was there, so I did it again and I got it,” Winters said, reflecting on his decisive play. This crucial moment energized the Caravan and ultimately led to their fourth consecutive state title.
The game unfolded amid freezing temperatures, as Mount Carmel’s typically explosive offense faced a formidable defense from Oswego, who limited them early on. Senior quarterback Emmett Dowling not only ran for a touchdown but also threw a TD pass to secure the lead. Mount Carmel now stands undefeated at 14-0 this season.
Special teams were pivotal in this matchup, with the Caravan’s performance setting up their first two scores. Senior punter Dean Kemph executed a strategic punt that pinned Oswego deep in their territory, leading to a TD run by Dowling just before halftime.
After the blocked punt by Winters, it was Gavin Conjar who scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown, marking a significant turning point in the game. “There’s no greater feeling,” Conjar expressed, highlighting the teamwork that defined their victory.
Mount Carmel’s defense was equally impressive, allowing only three first downs throughout the game. Junior linebacker Roman Igwebuike intercepted a pass and contributed significantly to shutting down Oswego’s offensive efforts. The Caravan’s defense stifled the opposition, limiting them to just 143 yards of total offense.
“Watching Cullen come back and make these plays after dealing with so many injuries was great,” Conjar remarked.
Head coach Jordan Lynch praised the team’s resilience and dedication, emphasizing the historical significance of the win: “We have a lot of legacy kids, players whose fathers played here or their brothers.” This victory not only adds to Mount Carmel’s storied history but also resonates deeply with players like Winters, whose brothers previously played for the team.
“After having to watch all the guys last year, this is a great feeling being part of this legacy,” Winters concluded, reflecting on the emotional weight of the championship.
The Caravan’s triumph marks a historic achievement in Illinois high school football, setting a record with their 17th state championship. Fans and supporters celebrated the team’s extraordinary journey as they upheld a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
As Mount Carmel revels in this victory, the players and coaches are already looking ahead, determined to maintain their winning streak and continue building on their legacy in the seasons to come.
