URGENT UPDATE: In a surprising turn of events, the No. 13 Minnesota State women’s hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss against Bemidji State during the US Hockey Hall of Fame Museum Women’s Faceoff Classic on February 10, 2024. This defeat marks a critical moment as the Mavericks struggle to maintain momentum in their season.
The Mavericks opened the scoring at 9:17 in the first period, with a goal from Taylor Otremba, assisted by Zoe Lopez and Mercury Bischoff. However, Bemidji State quickly responded with a power-play goal, leveling the score at 1-1 before the first intermission.
Despite generating several chances, including a power play opportunity following a boarding penalty against Bemidji State, Minnesota State was unable to capitalize in the second period. The Mavericks also defended well, killing off a penalty of their own, keeping the game tied as they entered the third period.
“It was a tough WCHA game,” said associate head coach Jeff Giesen. “We had our chances, but we need to find a way to score some goals.”
The decisive moment came at 12:03 in the third period when Bemidji State scored the go-ahead goal, leaving Minnesota State in a tough spot. The Mavericks pulled goalie Hailey Hansen late in the game in a desperate attempt to equalize, but their efforts fell short.
As the Mavericks prepare to face St. Cloud State next Friday, this loss raises urgent questions about their ability to rebound and secure crucial wins moving forward. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team responds in their upcoming match-up.
