UPDATE: Mila Kunis has opened up about her intense physical transformation while preparing for her role in the acclaimed psychological thriller “Black Swan”. In a revealing interview with Vogue, published earlier today, Kunis shared shocking details about her extreme weight loss and grueling training regimen, stating, “My prep was a lot of dancing and very little eating.”
The 42-year-old actress disclosed that she adhered to a drastically restricted diet, consuming mainly broth while dancing for up to 12 hours a day. “I know you’re not supposed to say that, but it’s the truth,” she emphasized. Kunis, who portrayed the character Lily, reflected on the challenging preparation alongside her co-star, Natalie Portman, who played Nina Sayers.
Originally allotted three months for their rigorous training, the timeline was extended to six months due to production financing issues. “It sucked for Darren [Aronofsky, the film’s director], but Nat and I were so happy because we had three extra months to dance,” Kunis explained. The physical toll became evident as she shared details of the demanding ballet scenes, revealing bruises on her ribs from being lifted repeatedly and a dislocated shoulder that required acupuncture to heal.
Portman added that the experience felt like “investigative journalism” as she learned about the ballet world from her trainer, a former dancer with the New York City Ballet. “It gave so much color and insight into that world,” she noted.
Kunis first discussed her significant weight loss, shedding 20 pounds, back in 2012, stating, “My shape is different.” She described her physique during filming as “muscles, like a little brick house, but skin and bones.” Following the production, she noted that her weight returned to different areas of her body, affecting her shape.
When asked if she would consider another role requiring weight loss, Kunis replied, “I’m not going to say I’d look forward to it, but if an offer came along, I’d do it.”
This candid reflection on the sacrifices made for performance highlights the intense pressures actors face in the industry. As the conversation around body image and health in Hollywood continues to evolve, Kunis’s revelations remind us of the personal toll behind the art of filmmaking.
