Mayor Bass Appoints Jaime Moore as New LA Fire Chief

UPDATE: Mayor Karen Bass has just appointed Jaime Moore, Deputy Chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), as the new chief of the agency, a decision pending approval from the City Council. If confirmed, Moore will make history as the second Latino and the first Spanish-speaking chief to lead the department.

At a press conference held downtown, Bass emphasized the urgent need for reforms within the LAFD. “Our work together will focus on reforming the LAFD to better prepare Los Angeles for major emergencies and the upcoming events like the World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games,” she stated. The mayor expressed confidence in Moore’s leadership, highlighting his dedication to improving responses to 911 calls across the city.

Moore, who has served the LAFD since 1995, is stepping up to replace Interim Chief Ronnie Villanueva. Villanueva took over after the controversial firing of former chief Kristin Crowley on February 21, 2023. Crowley’s ouster followed criticism regarding the department’s handling of the Palisades Fire, which devastated the area during a Santa Ana wind event.

In his acceptance remarks, Moore expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of supporting the department’s personnel. “To the members of the LAFD—sworn, civilian, and volunteers—thank you for your dedication and professionalism. You are the heart of this department,” he said. Moore vowed to prioritize strategic changes that will enhance disaster preparedness, staffing, and resource allocation.

The appointment has garnered immediate support from the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, the union representing LAFD firefighters. The union praised Moore’s leadership qualities and commitment to addressing the pressing needs of the department, which is currently facing significant staffing shortages. “Throughout his career with the LAFD, Chief Moore has shown strong leadership and a deep commitment to the department,” the union stated on social media.

Moore’s background includes a master’s degree in public administration and emergency management from California State University, Long Beach. He was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA, highlighting his deep roots in the community he aims to serve.

As the LAFD prepares for major upcoming events, including the Super Bowl, Moore faces the urgent task of ensuring the department is equipped to respond effectively to the city’s growing demands. The new chief is expected to foster a culture of integrity, respect, and innovation within the department.

Stay tuned for updates on the City Council’s decision regarding Moore’s confirmation. His leadership is anticipated to steer the LAFD into a new era of enhanced safety and community service for all Angelenos.
