Matt Olson Powers Braves to 11-3 Victory Over Nationals

UPDATE: In a commanding performance, the Atlanta Braves crushed the Washington Nationals 11-3 on September 18, 2023. Matt Olson delivered a pivotal three-run homer, his third consecutive game with a home run, leading the Braves to back-to-back victories.

Olson’s explosive night included going 4 for 5 at the plate, racking up four RBIs and three extra-base hits. The Braves surged ahead with Olson’s home run over the right-field wall in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 5-1. Drake Baldwin also shone with three hits and four RBIs, contributing significantly to the Braves’ offensive onslaught.

On the mound, Spencer Strider displayed dominance, allowing only one run over seven innings. Strider, who faced challenges in recent outings, struck out six and walked two, improving his record to 6-13. This victory marks a crucial turnaround for the Braves, who recently suffered four consecutive losses.

The Nationals initially took a 1-0 lead when rookie Daylen Lile hit his sixth home run of the season. Lile is on a roll, reaching safely in 15 straight games. However, Washington struggled to capitalize on opportunities, including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning that ended with a double play thanks to Baldwin’s quick fielding.

Despite entering the eighth inning without a hit since the fourth, the Nationals managed to score two runs, but it was not enough to mount a comeback. Starting pitcher Mitchell Parker (8-16) allowed six runs and ten hits in five innings, contributing to the Nationals’ struggles.

Key to the game, Olson’s recent surge is noteworthy; he has hit seven home runs in his last 18 games after hitting just one over a 34-game stretch. He now has 26 homers this season, maintaining a streak of at least 25 homers in all four seasons with Atlanta.

Looking ahead, the Braves prepare for a doubleheader against the Nationals tomorrow, September 19. Washington’s right-hander Jake Irvin (8-12, 5.70 ERA) is set to face the Braves in Game 1, while the starting pitcher for Atlanta remains unannounced. Game 2 will feature National’s left-hander MacKenzie Gore (5-14, 4.14) against Chris Sale (5-5, 2.52).

Stay tuned for more updates as the Braves look to extend their winning streak and the Nationals aim to bounce back.
