BREAKING: Authorities have arrested Carl John Butcho, the man accused of scamming couples out of over $200,000 for wedding services at the now-defunct venue Charleston Lane in Lake Conroe, Texas. This arrest follows the release of the true crime podcast, The Wedding Scammer, hosted by Justin Sayles, which highlighted Butcho’s deceptive schemes.
After an extensive investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Austin Police Department, Butcho was taken into custody under the alias “Lance Miller.” The arrest brings relief to numerous couples who were left devastated when their wedding plans fell apart.
Cindy Ou, one of the victims, shared her anguish, stating, “We spent 20 months to plan this day. These kinds of things happen once in your lifetime.” Ou revealed that she had paid approximately $52,000 for her wedding package, only to find herself scrambling for alternatives when Butcho vanished.
The podcast, which premiered in October 2023, has drawn significant attention to Butcho’s fraudulent activities. Sayles expressed his frustration that Butcho was able to continue scamming people while he was investigating. “Every single time his picture gets out there, his real name gets out there, it makes it harder for him to operate in the future,” Sayles said.
Authorities confirmed that at least 12 couples have been affected, and Butcho owes five people a total of about $12,000 in refunds. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that this arrest is a critical step in holding Butcho accountable for his actions.
Butcho is currently booked into Travis County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Victims and their families are urged to stay vigilant as the investigation continues. For further updates, follow Mo Haider on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
