URGENT UPDATE: Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has just announced a staggering $7.1 billion in donations to nonprofits for 2025, representing a significant increase from her previous contributions. This revelation was made public in an essay on her website, where Scott emphasized that the dollar amount is merely a reflection of the caring actions resonating throughout communities this year.
In comparison, Scott donated $2.6 billion in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023. With this latest round of gifts, her total philanthropic contributions since 2019 has surged to an impressive $26.3 billion. This unprecedented increase in giving is generating excitement and attention across the nonprofit sector and beyond.
Scott’s donations are particularly impactful because they come with no strings attached, allowing recipient organizations to allocate funds as they see fit. According to Forbes, Scott’s net worth, estimated at $33 billion, primarily originates from Amazon shares received following her divorce from company founder Jeff Bezos.
Notably, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are set to benefit significantly, having received $783 million from Scott this year alone. This data, compiled by Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University, underscores the scale of Scott’s contributions to educational equity.
“MacKenzie Scott is like an equity machine,” said Gasman, praising Scott’s commitment to support HBCUs during a time when educational equity efforts face challenges.
While not all previously funded schools received contributions this time, several first-time recipients emerged, highlighting Scott’s evolving philanthropic strategy. Since 2020, Gasman has tracked an astounding $1.35 billion in donations from Scott to HBCUs.
Additionally, organizations such as the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) received $70 million, which will be invested in a collective endowment for participating HBCUs. Another $50 million was allocated to the Native Forward Scholars Fund, which offers scholarships to Native American students.
Unlike many major donors and foundations that require detailed applications and progress reports, Scott’s approach is refreshingly straightforward. Organizations typically receive notification of their funding with little advance warning, allowing for immediate impact without bureaucratic delays.
In a recent statement, Kim Mazzuca, CEO of the nonprofit 10,000 Degrees, expressed her astonishment at receiving a first-time gift of $42 million from Scott. “I was speechless,” Mazzuca stated, reflecting on the transformative potential of such a substantial donation.
Scott’s focus on empowering organizations that already deliver proven solutions resonates deeply within the nonprofit community. Mazzuca noted, “She comes from a very deep, reflective space, very heartfelt,” emphasizing Scott’s understanding of the needs within the nonprofit sector.
In her latest essay, Scott encourages collective action, stating, “There are many ways to influence how we move through the world, and where we land.” This call to action emphasizes the importance of community-driven initiatives and the ripple effects of generosity.
As Scott continues to redefine philanthropy, her latest contributions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on countless lives. The world will be watching closely to see how these funds will be utilized to uplift communities and foster lasting change.
