UPDATE: Lenox High School’s standout athlete, Gabe Funk, has been named the 2025 South Central Iowa Athlete of the Year by three regional newspapers. This prestigious honor highlights Funk’s exceptional achievements across four sports, making him a remarkable figure in Lenox’s rich athletic tradition.
The announcement comes as the senior prepares to continue his athletic journey at the University of Northern Iowa in track and field, following in the footsteps of NFL star Spencer Brown. Funk expressed excitement about his future, stating, “When Spencer was back in April, we talked, and he said to enjoy it. It was a lot of fun for him.” Funk’s legacy includes multiple state championships and school records that are hard to match.
In his final season, Funk led Lenox’s baseball team with a stunning .427 batting average and an impressive 56 stolen bases, topping not just Class 1A but the entire state. He capped off his high school career with a 4.0 GPA, underscoring his commitment both on and off the field.
Funk’s accolades span football, basketball, baseball, and track, where he has established himself as a five-time state champion. His coach, Michael Nardini, recognized Funk’s potential early on, recalling, “When I moved to Lenox, I watched Gabe grow. His standout moments began in junior track, and he continued to excel.”
In football, Funk led the Tigers to back-to-back semifinal appearances in the UNI-Dome, accumulating a remarkable 40-5 record over his four years. He threw for 1,319 yards with 19 touchdowns in his senior season, showcasing his versatility as a quarterback and defensive back.
The emotional engagement surrounding Funk’s journey resonates deeply with the community. “It’s small-town pride,” he said. “You do it for your friends. It’s an unspoken bond.” This sentiment reflects the connection he has fostered with his teammates, emphasizing the importance of loyalty and competition in his life.
As Funk transitions to collegiate track, he is poised to make an impact as a 400-meter runner and potentially in the decathlon. His coach believes, “Gabe’s best days in track are still ahead of him.” Funk’s ambition is clear as he aims to improve his performance and compete against top-tier athletes.
The recognition from the Creston News Advertiser, Osceola Sentinel Tribune, and Adair County Free Press not only honors Funk’s athletic prowess but also sets a standard for future athletes in the region. The award, established in 2013, celebrates outstanding graduating male and female senior athletes across nine area high schools.
As the community rallies behind Funk, his story serves as an inspiration for young athletes. With his competitive spirit and dedication, Gabe Funk is not just a name in Lenox’s history; he is a symbol of excellence and commitment.
Looking ahead, all eyes will be on Funk as he embarks on his collegiate career. The excitement is palpable as he prepares to take on new challenges at UNI, where he plans to major in accounting and business management. His journey is just beginning, and the entire community is eager to support him every step of the way.
