LASD Launches Urgent Security Program for Altadena Construction Sites

UPDATE: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has just announced an urgent new initiative to enhance security at construction sites in Altadena, California, amid ongoing rebuilding efforts following the devastating Eaton Fire nearly a year ago. As hundreds of homes rise from the ashes, authorities are taking swift action to protect valuable building materials and prevent costly thefts that could hinder progress.

In a significant move, LASD has launched the Construction Check Program, specifically designed to safeguard the numerous active construction sites throughout Altadena. Capt. Ethan Marquez of the LASD Altadena Station stated, “We know that after crews leave, things are often left on site.” The program aims to collaborate with contractors to ensure they are aware of protective measures to deter theft.

Construction sites often become prime targets for thieves, especially during evenings and weekends when materials are left unattended. Under this new program, deputies will conduct targeted patrols and investigate any suspicious activity. “If we see someone with a truck who looks like they might be doing work—especially at night or on the weekend—we’re going to check it out,” Capt. Marquez emphasized.

For families like the Markarians, who are eagerly awaiting their move back into their newly rebuilt home, the increased security presence has provided reassurance. Minas Markarian shared, “We’ve noticed the sheriff patrol constantly here. That makes a big difference.”

Community members have also stepped up their vigilance, installing construction fencing, cameras, and lighting in poorly lit areas. Markarian noted, “Some of our neighbors added cameras and lights because the street gets extremely dark in the evening.” This collaborative effort highlights a community united in rebuilding, ensuring safety and security.

Authorities report that Altadena’s crime rate is currently at its lowest level on record, a trend they aim to maintain as more families return to their homes. Residents are already noticing the benefits of this enhanced security, with neighbors actively looking out for one another. “We’ve had family friends checking on the house, and neighbors have questioned them. We appreciate that,” Markarian added. “We want to know that everyone here is here for a good reason.”

The LASD’s Construction Check Program is set to remain in place as long as construction activity continues, reinforcing both safety and a sense of shared responsibility among residents. With the community coming together to rebuild and support each other, the hope is that Altadena will not only recover but thrive as families return to their homes.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as officials continue to prioritize safety and community vigilance in Altadena.
