UPDATE: A Los Angeles man, Jeovani Pluma, has been sentenced to a potential life term in state prison for his involvement in two brutal murders, one of which involved a victim set on fire. Pluma, aged 24, received a sentence of 25 years to life after pleading no contest to first-degree murder for the death of Ulises Nieto-Cabrera, 30, during a court hearing on December 19, 2023.
In addition to the murder charge, Pluma was sentenced to an extra two years and eight months for a hit-and-run incident that killed Leonidas Accip Serech, 39, in Koreatown. The tragic accident occurred on April 26, 2022, when Serech and his brother were riding bicycles to their bakery jobs. Serech was struck and killed, leaving his brother injured.
Pluma’s plea was part of a deal where he also accepted a charge of voluntary manslaughter related to Serech’s death. This sentence will run concurrently with his life term, ensuring he faces significant time behind bars for his actions.
The shocking murder of Nieto-Cabrera took place on New Year’s Day 2021, when he was found in the 700 block of Rockwood Road in Pasadena. Authorities reported that he succumbed to severe thermal injuries after being transported to a hospital. The motive for this horrific crime remains unclear.
Since his arrest in 2022, Pluma has been held in custody, and this sentencing marks a crucial step in delivering justice for the victims and their families.
Authorities and community members alike are left grappling with the aftermath of these violent acts. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has emphasized the importance of accountability in such severe cases, highlighting the impact of crime on families and neighborhoods.
As the community mourns these senseless losses, attention now turns to the future safety and security of local residents, particularly in light of this disturbing pattern of violence. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
