URGENT UPDATE: Japan is on the brink of a beer crisis as production of the beloved Asahi Super Dry has been halted due to a severe cyberattack targeting Asahi Group Holdings. The attack, which occurred on September 29, 2025, has left many retailers, including Family Mart and 7-Eleven, warning of dwindling stocks of this iconic beverage.
Asahi Group confirmed the disruption in operations in a news release, stating they are experiencing a “system failure” that has affected production at the majority of their 30 production facilities across Japan. The company’s order and shipment operations have been suspended, leading to immediate concerns over the availability of Asahi products in stores nationwide.
Retailers have begun to feel the impact. Family Mart announced that, due to the suspension of Asahi products, their private-label bottled beverages are also expected to face shortages. Customers at 7-Eleven locations have reported notices indicating that shipments of Asahi Super Dry and other popular products, like Mitsuya Cider soda, have been suspended.
Currently, Asahi has not provided a timeline for when operations might resume, fueling fears among beer lovers. The company, based in Tokyo, reported first-half 2025 sales of approximately 1,360 billion yen, or about $9.24 billion. However, its stock price has already dropped over 6.5% in the past five days and near 7% over the past year as the crisis unfolds.
Despite the turmoil, Asahi has indicated that there has been no confirmed leakage of customer data. However, the suspension of call center operations and customer service desks adds to the frustration of consumers eager to know when they can expect their favorite beer back on the shelves.
With no clear resolution in sight, beer enthusiasts and retailers alike are watching closely. The situation remains fluid, and consumers are advised to stock up on Asahi Super Dry while supplies last.
