UPDATE: As Thanksgiving approaches, Kansas officials are ramping up traffic enforcement to ensure safety on the roads. From November 22-29, 2023, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), and Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) are urging all drivers and passengers to prioritize safety by buckling up and avoiding distractions.
Last year’s Thanksgiving holiday resulted in three fatalities and 193 injuries due to traffic crashes in Kansas, according to KDOT statistics. “Seat belts are the best defense in a crash,” emphasized Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “Before leaving the driveway, all drivers should check that everyone is buckled or in proper safety seats and put their phones down.”
Authorities are warning drivers to expect a heightened law enforcement presence throughout the holiday period. “KHP, along with law enforcement agencies across the state, will be on roadways enforcing Kansas’ traffic and occupant protection laws,” stated KHP Superintendent Colonel Erik Smith. He added, “Remember, seat belts are the best defense against impaired and distracted drivers. No matter how long or short your drive, it’s critical that drivers and passengers buckle up. Every trip. Every time.”
In anticipation of increased travel, the KTA is also preparing for heavier traffic volumes. “Our crews work hard to keep the Turnpike safe, but the most important safety action is the one you control—fasten your seat belt,” said Andrew Arola, KTA’s Director of Roadway Maintenance and Facilities. “Before you hit the road, buckle up and drive alertly.”
Before embarking on your journey, KDOT, KHP, and KTA recommend that motorists check their vehicle’s tires and fluid levels. It’s also advised to carry a basic winter travel kit for emergencies. Essential items include blankets, bottled water, non-perishable food, a small shovel or bag of sand, a cell phone charger, ice scraper, jumper cables, flashlight with fresh batteries, and a first-aid kit.
