UPDATE: Former Houston Astros first-round draft pick Rob Mallicoat has tragically passed away at the age of 60 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mallicoat, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon, liver, and lung cancer five years ago, died on Sunday, leaving a profound impact on the baseball community.
Born on November 16, 1964, in St. Helens, Oregon, Mallicoat’s journey to the big leagues began unexpectedly when scouts attended a high school game to watch a catcher. Instead, they witnessed the left-handed pitcher strike out the catcher twice, earning him attention that would lead to his selection in the 1984 MLB Draft as the 16th overall pick by the Astros.
Throughout his career, Mallicoat exhibited resilience and determination, playing 11 seasons of professional baseball, including parts of three in Major League Baseball during 1987, 1991, and 1992. His standout moment came on August 18, 1991, when he secured his only MLB save with a remarkable performance at Dodger Stadium, striking out legends Darryl Strawberry and Gary Carter.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including injuries that halted his career momentum, Mallicoat’s passion for the game never wavered. He once reflected on his rapid rise to the majors, stating, “The idea of bringing a 19-year or 20-year-old to the bigs was still a rare thing… I felt I was on a somewhat accelerated program.” His journey was not just about the accolades; it was about the love for the game.
After retiring from baseball, Mallicoat transitioned to a successful career in IT, eventually becoming a senior program manager at Microsoft. He remained humble about his athletic achievements, only revealing his past when recognized by colleagues. “Hey Malli,” Nolan Ryan once said, acknowledging their shared history.
As his health declined and treatments proved ineffective, Mallicoat made the poignant decision to stop chemotherapy. He chose to embrace life fully, stating, “I wanted to go in my car and drive and enjoy my remaining days.” His legacy continues through his three children, his mother Jo, and his partner Tracy.
Mallicoat’s passing is a significant loss to the baseball community, where he will be remembered not only for his talent but also for his spirit and determination. As tributes pour in, fans and colleagues alike celebrate his contributions to the sport.
